Jill Scott is the only child of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia the state of Pennsylvania on the 4th of April, 1972. Her mother was her grandmother and grew up as a single child. Scott received her education at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. While working two jobs part-time, she was also a teacher in Temple University. Her dream was to be a English high school teacher. This dream was however put on hold when after 3 years of studies and as an assistant to teachers she dropped out of university. After starting her career singing at poetry events, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. She was first outed as a performer at the Roots Show. Later, she secured collaborations stars such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience on stage as she performed in the Canada tour of the Broadway show Rent. She was the first signing artist for Hidden Beach Recordings. Hidden Beach Recordings label.
